28th June - 2nd July 2023
A chance meeting between ex-lovers sparks a game of romantic musical chairs over a weekend in the country, as hopelessly mismatched couples find themselves confronted by their own vanities and deceptions.
A Little Night Music tells the story of the secrets, betrayals and loves of three wealthy families and their domestic servants set in Downtonesque Edwardian Britain.
Successful middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman has recently married naïve 18-year-old Anne in what turns out to be a terrible match.
Fredrik’s son Henrik has secretly fallen in love with his stepmother, despite his relationship with Petra, the household’s flirtatious maid. When Fredrik and Anne visit the theatre, he is reunited with his old flame, actress Desiree Armfeldt, and sparks fly – even though Desiree is engaged in an affair with married dragoon Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, much to the misery of his wife Charlotte.
Desiree's mother, Madam Armfeldt (the family matriarch and reminiscent of Maggie Smith) and ward of Desiree’s daughter, Fredrika, agrees to host a party under the stars at her country estate. Each of the characters arrives with their own amorous aspirations, plans and fears for the evening culminating in a series of dramatic events.
Glistening with wit and romance, Sondheim’s tantalising tale includes the well-known songs Send in the Clowns, The Miller's Son and A Weekend in the Country.
