Your visit to the Roman Theatre

How to find us

The Roman Theatre of Verulamium is situated on Bluehouse Hill, St Albans, AL3 6AE. Click here for the Google Map. There is no parking or drop off at the Roman Theatre itself – please do not try to enter the site in your car. The nearest parking (2 minutes’ walk) is the St Albans Museum car park. Please note that during the Festival there are other events taking place in the local area which means this car park may be full – alternative parking can be found on King Harry Lane, a 10 minute walk, or in the city centre, a 15-20 minute walk from the theatre. If you have particular access requirements, please let us know, as we have a limited amount of disabled drop off spaces that can be booked. The theatre is a 25 minute walk or a 10 minute taxi ride from St Albans City station.

The elements

Whilst we can guarantee a wonderful afternoon or evening’s entertainment, we are unfortunately not in control of the great British weather. The auditorium is open to the elements, although we are very much hoping the sun will shine on us. Be aware that even on fine days the site is sometimes windy and it can get chilly after dark, so please dress appropriately (umbrellas may not be used in the auditorium to ensure views of the stage are not obscured). Equally, on fine days, it can get hot and there is no shade. The performance will continue whatever the weather, unless conditions become dangerous. Tickets are non-refundable in the event of cancellation because of the weather but may be exchanged in accordance with our policy.

Timing and seating

The gates and bar open 60 minutes before and the arena opens 45 minutes before the performance starts. Tickets are for unreserved seats – when you arrive you will be shown to the next available space. If your party wants to sit together as a group, you will need to arrive together. All seats have a good view of the stage and the sound is clear throughout the auditorium thanks to our audio system. Seating is provided and you do not need to bring your own chair, but you may wish to bring a cushion. Cushions and blankets are also available to hire at the theatre, and toilets are provided on site. Due to the challenges of this historic site, disabled access is limited but we strive to accommodate guests with limited mobility – please contact us at in advance of your visit so we can discuss your needs.

Our brand new bar is open before and after the show and during the interval selling a wide range of drinks and snacks served up with breathtaking views across the historic site and Ver Valley. Although we would prefer you to purchase snacks and drinks at the theatre as this revenue further supports our productions, you may bring your own picnic to eat in our picnic area overlooking the arena. We are working towards reducing our environmental impact and all cups in our bar are compostable. The Roman Theatre is a non-smoking site. Cash is not accepted at our bar and retail outlets.
