Her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her she can do better by making her stories more personal.Begrudgingly, Jo weaves the story of how she and her sisters - Meg, the eldest, who's on the brink of love, sweet-natured Beth who always puts others first and Amy, the youngest and most precocious - grew up in America.Even though money is short, times are tough and their father is away, their infectious sense of fun sweeps everyone up in their adventures - including Laurie, the boy next door. And through sisterly squabbles and tragic losses, the sisters discover that growing up is sometimes very hard to do.Louisa May Alcott’s timeless and captivating book is brought to life in a brand new adaptation, perfect for all the family. Whilst we can guarantee a wonderful evening’s entertainment, we are unfortunately not in control of the great British weather.

The auditorium is open to the elements so please dress appropriately. A Christmas Carol is a winter open air production, so please remember to wrap up warm. Although we hope to avoid the rain, it can be damp in the air and on the ground so we recommend you wear waterproofs, but please do not bring umbrellas as they can obscure the view for other audience members.

We always endeavour to continue with performances, but if the weather makes it too difficult to do so we may be forced to cancel. Tickets are non-refundable in the event of cancellation because of the weather but may be exchanged in accordance with our policy.

Food, drink and merchandise

Our hilltop bar is open before and after the performance, and during the interval and provides a range of drinks and light snacks. Why not come and enjoy the spectacular surroundings, views and sunsets over a drink?

We encourage you not to bring your own food and drink onto the site. All profits from our food and drink sales are reinvested into the Roman Theatre Open Air Festival performance programme.

We are working towards reducing our environmental impact and all cups in our bar are compostable. We are also sourcing locally wherever possible.

A range of Roman Theatre and show merchandise will be available from our shop.

All our bar and retail outlets are cashless.

Facilities

A picture showing A Christmas Carol at The Roman Theatre

The gates open 15 minutes before the performance starts. Latecomers are not guaranteed admission and will only be allowed to enter the Arena at a suitable point in the performance.

A Christmas Carol 2024 is a promenade performance which means that you will be walking around the site and watching the action in various locations. There is no seating, except in the refreshment areas, so you will be on your feet for the full 60 minutes of the performance. You will be walking on some areas of uneven ground and grass and up and down steps so we recommend you wear sturdy shoes.

Blankets are available to hire.

Toilet facilities are provided.

The Roman Theatre is a non-smoking site. Please do not smoke anywhere in the grounds or on Gorhambury Drive – if you wish to smoke, you will need to walk out onto Bluehouse Hill.

Unfortunately, because The Roman Theatre is a scheduled ancient monument, dogs are not allowed onto the site (except guide dogs).

For any general enquiries about your booking, please email us.
