Cyclops tells how the hero Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan war, defeats the one-eyed cannibalistic giant Polyphemus with the help of some shipwrecked satyrs — the half-man, half-goat followers of Dionysos (god of wine and theatre), and their wine-loving “father”, Silenus.
After the five-star success of their production of Aristophanes’ Ploutos (Wealth) at The Space in London in 2020, Thiasos Theatre Company brings this rarely-performed classic to life with vibrant original songs and dances drawn from the traditions of Aegean and Mediterranean islands. There is heroism, suspense and plenty of rude jokes!
Established in 1997, Thiasos Theatre Company specialises in intercultural performances of Greek classic plays featuring original music and dance. The company has created a number of landmark productions of tragedies by Aeschylus and Euripides and comedies by Aristophanes in the UK, US and Europe as well as conducting workshops and demonstrations at schools and universities. These have included new productions of Hippolytos (Cockpit theatre, London; Teatr Polski, Warsaw; Gardzienice CTP, Indonesia Kontemporer Festival) and Bacchae (New College Gardens, Oxford; Gardzienice CTP).
Reviews for Ploutos:
“This new production is bouncy, energetic and huge fun. The love they have for the material shines through in the performance.” Sue in the Stalls:
“Put together with heart by a company who knows their text and how to make it sing. The lively, playful elements that Thiasos throws into the pot are as old as Ancient Greece – and they still hit.” The Upcoming
A very slick, charming and bombastic production.” London Theatre1
