Hassan plays Gratiano in The Merchant of Venice, which runs at The Roman Theatre Open Air Festival from Wednesday 31st July to Sunday 11th August, inclusive.

We caught up with him to ask about his experience of featuring in the show at the Roman Theatre.

How long have you been an actor/performer?

I’ve been a professional actor for 8 years. But I would say I started performing as a 10/11 year old. In my year 6 leaving performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I played Oberon, the king of fairies. We adapted the script into modern English and added songs and dancing! So I guess I started off as a triple-threat!

How did you get into acting?

I struggled with academic subjects at school and always found creative lessons more fulfilling. I enjoyed doing impressions and accents and making my family and friends laugh and it grew from there.

What made you want to audition for OVO’s The Merchant of Venice?

It’s a play I haven’t explored in full, besides watching the Al Pacino movie when I was a kid. Plus I really want to perform on the gorgeous Roman Theatre stage.

What do you most enjoy about performing in the Roman Theatre Open Air Festival/at the Roman Theatre?

Live theatre always gives me a buzz. Every show is different. The nerves, excitement and anticipation when you hear the audience filtering through, you can’t replicate it!

What’s your favourite part of the show?

Is it a cop out to say all the scenes are incredible and evoke a different reaction.

Why do you think the audience will enjoy this show?

I think the audience will enjoy the balance of laugh out loud comedy and gut-punching brutality. Plus there are fabulous performances!
