“We chose company because it is a very clever and funny musical, and has so many relatable characters and themes.”

Lorraine Bottomley, Act4
It is an Act 4 tradition to choose a Sondheim musical to perform – what led you to choose Company for this year?

Yes, Act 4 have performed 3 Sondheim musicals at the Roman theatre to date – A Little Night Music, Into the Woods and A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum. We love Stephen Sondheim with his wonderful scores, clever witty lyrics and interesting and rich storytelling. Also his shows are less performed than many others by amdram groups, so it gives the audience something different to see. We chose company because it is a very clever and funny musical, and has so many relatable characters and themes – relationships, commitment and marriage.

What is unique about your version of Company?

Following many recent updates of the show, with gender swaps and set in the 2020s, we have actually decided to go back to the original and set our version firmly in the 1970s when it was written. We have also decided to take a new perspective and explore the scenes from how Bobby (the protagonist) perceived them, rather than actually how they happened. This allows us to emphasise different aspects of the scenes from other versions. We are also excited to bring a slice of New York City and central park to the roman theatre.

Describe the show in three words?

Witty, Relatable, Emotional

Why should audiences come and watch the show?

Because it is a wonderful, very funny study of marriage and relationships, and everyone will relate to some of the elements. The music and lyrics are great, and so cleverly written, with numbers such as Side By Side, Ladies Who Lunch and Barcelona. We have assembled a cast of excellent local actors and singers. The show will make the audience laugh out loud, but is also extremely touching and emotional. It will delight both fans of musical theatre, and those who just enjoy a great comedy.

You have taken to the Roman Theatre stage many times – what is your favourite thing about performing there?

We have two favourites. Firstly I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change – this show was the first one back after lockdown in 2021, when theatres were still closed. It was incredible to watch our audiences connecting and laughing again. Then last year A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum. Again a comedy, and set in a Roman Forum – so the perfect stage.

Finally, which song do you think encapsulates the essence of the story?

Bobby’s final song ‘Being Alive’ is one of the all time best musical theatre numbers. It captures the essence of the piece, that human connection can be scary, painful and imperfect, but that deep feelings for another, even when painful, are part of what it is to be truly alive.

You can see Act4’s production of Company at the  OVO Roman Theatre Open Air Festival from 21st – 25th July 2026.
